My Work

The Little Fish (2010)

One of my favourite childhood books was “The Little Black Fish” by Samad Behrangi. It is about a curious little fish whose longing to find the sea makes her ditch the safety of the local stream for an adventurous journey into an unknown world.
I tried to illustrate the same with ceramic. I made a bowl with red clay on the wheel and added four fish figures in a circular line. Then a hole was made between two fish figures at a level slightly higher than them. Another little clay fish was added with its small head sticking out through the hole in an attempt to see the world outside. All parts of the bowl were covered with white slip and baked to 900oC. Copper alkaline glaze was applied only to the middle parts both on the inside and outside to produce the blue colour representing water here. The work was baked to 1000oC.
