Stoneware Mug (2011)

There are some artworks belonging to the Seljuk dynasty in present-day Iran dating back to the 10th century. They are mostly metal dishes such as water pots. Each of them has a unique handle which looks like the body of an animal, usually a lion whose head reaches up to in the mouth of the pot as if looking at the liquid. There is a belief that the liquid gets purified while the animal is looking at it.
I made a stoneware mug with a handle which looks like the body of a lion extending up to the mouth of the mug and hugging the mug with open arms. The animal figure has an ergonomic benefit and holding the mug becomes easier, which adds more value to it. I used red clay as subsurface glaze and baked it to 1200oC.
