Designing Ceramic Tiles with Carpet Motifs (2015)

Decorative tiles have a strong visual appeal. When it comes to designing tiles, the motifs on traditional Kurdish carpets works as a great source of inspiration for me. Kurdish carpets are notable for their intricate patterns, rich colours and motifs, each with a specific significance. There is a wide range of motifs to choose from. After a much careful observation, I choose the motifs and transfer them onto clay to make stamps. After carving, each model is left to dry and put in a kiln later to turn it into terracotta. Finally, a clay slab is made, and by applying a little pressure, the motifs are transferred onto the slab. Tiles of different shapes and sizes are cut next as per needs. These decorative tiles can be used to design billboards, wall accents, sconces, etc.
